Former Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has clarified that John Obi Mikel did not personally fund the Nigeria U‑23 team's flights to the 2016 Rio Olympics contrary to recent claims but instead had to use his own money to cover hotel and training costs when officials failed to fulfil their obligations. Mikel, the team captain and one of three over‑age players, stepped in to pay more than £30,000 to ensure accommodation and training arrangements were secured amid chaotic preparations.
